Exercise Science - Metabolic Conditioning

MaxLiving's exercise program is based on metabolic conditioning. This umbrella term encompasses things like HIIT (high-intensity interval training) and high-intensity/short-duration training that have been highly researched to be the most effective form of exercise.

Two major systems control everything in your body: the nervous system (the master control system) and the endocrine system (second in command). The endocrine system most directly controls metabolism. It is a sophisticated system of chemical messengers (called hormones) that orchestrates many specific physiological activities. The most significant benefit of exercise comes from conditioning the body's metabolism. Metabolic conditioning, or “metcon,” improves energy, sleep, recuperative powers, and more.

Metabolic conditioning using high-intensity/short-duration exercise is a variation of high-intensity interval training (HIIT). It will elicit a specific hormonal response, which puts someone in an optimal fat-burning, muscle-building, restorative state. In other words, metcon can regulate and balance hormones most optimally.

 

The Afterburn Effect 

When you exercise, your body departs from a state of rest or homeostasis. This puts an increased demand on your physiology. The greater the physical departure, the more your body has to adapt. The more you train your metabolism, the more fit you become. Once you stop the activity, your body has to return to a resting state, which requires energy. With long-duration, moderate, or low-intensity exercise (like walking or going for a jog on the treadmill), your physiological departure from a state of rest is minimal.
